Are you a fan of the Game of Thrones? Then you have quarrelled over who the main character Game of Thrones is. Jon Snow? Daenerys? Sansa? Tyrion? Bran? Someone else? The problem is that every time the character seems to become the hero, they are killed.
Several main characters still remain, but how to determine the one true protagonist? You’ll be surprised to find out that this question can be solved with the help of math. Yes, that math most of you hate. However, mathematicians managed to work out who the main characters of Game of Thrones are in a highly scientific way. The result may shock you.
Mathematically This Is the Real Main Character of Game of Thrones
The professor of mathematics, Andrew L. Beveridge, and an undergraduate, Jie Shan, applied the network science to reveal who Game of Thrones main characters are. The book and the HBO series with lots of characters, intricate relationships and confusing plot were ideal to be studied scientifically.
In short, mathematicians connected the characters when they interplayed in the The Storm of Swords. To be linked, the characters shouldn’t be the friends or relatives, instead, the links show how often the characters are close (speak with each other, are mentioned together), how many people the characters are connected with, and how important that people are in the general network.
The result? Tyrion Lannister is mathematically the most important character. Are you surprised? Being the Hand of the King, he is central to the most important events. Then goes Jon Snow who has a prominent position in the network, being connected with the Night’s Watch, Wildings beyond the Wall, and highborn lords. The real surprise may be that Sansa Stark, but not Daenerys, takes the third place.

And What Do Fans Think about the Main Characters in Game of Thrones?
We asked the fans what they thought about all that and got cool and unexpected results. One of the most interesting versions of the main characters in Game of Thrones is “Tyrion is more central. We’ve seen Tyrion in Winterfell, at the Wall, in Kings Landing, at the Eyrie, in Pentos and Volantis, through Old Valyria and in Mereen. I think he’s met every major character, which no other characters have.” This particular point of view supports the findings of mathematicians. However, some fans think that Tyrion is first because of the screen time. Hm, that is also true, Tyrion appears on the screen more often than other characters. OK, let’s have a look at some other versions.
“Technically the main character is Jon Snow. Many speculate that the title ‘A Song Of Ice And Fire’ actually refers to Jon Snow, being born of both Stark (Ice) and Targaryen (Fire) bloodlines.” Wow, born of Stark and Targarien? Sounds like a spoiler. Maybe this fan knows something?
Many fans suppose that Jon is not only among the main characters Game of Thrones, but actually is the real main hero: “Let’s be real, it’s Jon.” “Jon is the star of the show… I don’t think Tyrion is a ‘main character,’ though. He’s just a fan favourite that’s gotten a lot of screen time because he tends to lighten the mood while also having an important role in the story.”
Among other interesting answers are “Jon and Dany,” “The Realm,” “Lord Varys.” If you’re interested in fans’ answers, go to our topic on Reddit.
The Game of Thrones is surely the most impressive and unexpected TV series that attracts viewers from different countries. What do we personally think about the main characters of the Game of Thrones? We just hope that Tyrion, Jon, Sansa or Daenerys won’t be killed off in the next season. How we’d go without them?
